Roadside Work in Soquel Demo Forest
    September 30, 2003

This letter is to advise you that Soquel Demonstration State Forest is currently conducting a small-scale hardwood harvesting operation along Hihn's Mill Road. The contractor is working in the vicinity of Braille Trail and proceeding westward. Please use extra caution when passing through the area. Firewood is being cut and split on-site and removed by various size trucks. All work will be done on weekdays only.

The purpose of the operation is to remove dead and dying trees or those likely to fall onto the road. Many of you may have noticed the large number of dead tanoaks at the bottom of Braille Trail. A few people were wondering if we would be continuing up Braille Trail. At this time it is not practical to remove trees more than 150 feet from the road. Lately several dead trees have snapped and fallen without notice. As the weather changes, more such trees can fall suddenly. Also, be aware that there could be dead limbs (widow makers) falling from residual trees for a while after operations have finished.

None of the roads or trails will be closed but you should use extra caution in those areas and where you see their vehicles hauling wood. If you approach an active operation, make sure the workers see you before passing through. Operations will continue through to the end of October if the weather stays favorable.

A somewhat similar operation is also being done along Corral Road - sometimes on weekends too. If you have any questions, you can call the SDSF office at (831) 475-8643. Thanks for your help to keep this safe.
