The Latest on Nisene General Plan
December 14, 2001
The October 20th public workshop for the Nisene Marks General Plan took place with good attendance from users, user groups and neighbors of the park. The General Plan consultant presented the three alternatives in detail, and they, along with officials from CA State Parks, entertained questions and allowed for public comment. The draft proposals were reported in the last update.
One controversial detail in common with all three proposals was the consideration of completely rebuilding West Ridge Trail to strict environmental guidelines, and then opening it to shared use. Supporters argued that this would mitigate current erosion problems. In addition, there was discussion about the fact that proposals “A” and “B” effectively cut off potential shared-use trail access to the Soquel Demonstration Forest.
An alternative to the three options presented by the consultant was a proposal by the Stewards of the Soquel Forest (they called it “Proposal D”), which followed the guidelines of proposal “C” but allowed for some softening of the boundaries to allow for shared use of the existing Cussack’s Meadow trail, as well as a potential new shared use trail along China Ridge.
At the next meeting a final draft proposal will be presented. It isn’t too late to make your opinion heard. Send comments to: nisenemarks@rhaa.com or Nisene General Plan, c/o RHAA, 225 Miller Ave, Mill Valley, CA 94941. Call 831-429-2882 for more info.
