Sunday, April 19 gave us classic Santa Cruz beach weather as the morning air was warm and calm. However it wasnt the beach, but trailwork, that brought an enthusiastic group of new volunteers from Cupertino and the Moore Creek neighborhood as we reengaged the dense hillside of French Broom that has been seeding the preserves eastern edge.
Middle school students Pramukh Govindaraju, Elliot Ki, Rashi Jain, and Asmita Gathoo along with their parents Madhukar Govindaraju, Fred Ki, Rashmi Jain and Suchita Gathoo teamed with Moore Creek neighbors Chris Waters and John Bono to test the levering capability of the famous orange Weed Wrenches.
The crew warmed-up with the temperature, pushing the line of flowering broom up and away from the preserve. Our modest gains were hard won against the dry late-season soil. Next seasons rains will make it possible to finish the hillside so we can turn all of our energy back to ongoing maintenance of previously worked areas.
As energy stores gave-in to the heat of the day, the trailworkers transitioned down to the bridge to work up and out of the preserve removing second growth broom plants along the way.
Thanks to the above mentioned volunteers including Val Cole for scouting our worksite and guiding the crew at the start of the day. Thanks also to all the volunteers who made this season at Moore Creek Preserve a success including staff with the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County who delivered burritos to hungry workers on several workdays. The dedication of volunteers is apparent on every walk through Moore Creek.
